History

We started writing our part of history some 140 years ago, with just 28 people and our founder Albert Boehringer (1861-1939). Since then Boehringer Ingelheim has grown from a humble chemical factory producing lactic acid, to a global enterprise with 53,000 employees in over 130 markets worldwide.

Ever committed to groundbreaking pharmaceutical innovation across our three business units Human Pharma, Animal Health and Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing, we have learned over the generations that the challenging path towards health innovation requires long-term commitment, resilience, and transformative action. Decades of cutting-edge science and innovation has brought us to the cusp of pioneering huge healthcare breakthroughs in some of the most devastating disease areas and challenges we face globally.
