Introducing CIAS (Cognitive Impairment Associated with Schizophrenia)

Schizophrenia affects 1 in 100 people, yet the condition can be misunderstood due to some symptoms being overlooked, such as cognitive impairment

Cognitive symptoms are often the earliest sign of schizophrenia to develop.

Cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia (CIAS) has a significant impact on those affected, as well as their care partners and family. Approximately 85% of people living with schizophrenia will experience some level of cognitive impairment and these symptoms are usually amongst the earliest to develop. CIAS can create difficulties in people living their day to day life, such as missing doctor’s appointments, or struggling to cook and follow recipes. Overcoming the challenge presented by CIAS could allow people living with schizophrenia to live a more autonomous and productive life.

At Boehringer Ingelheim, our mission is to tackle unmet medical needs in Mental Health such as CIAS through precision psychiatry to enable people to thrive. Through innovative and patient centric approaches, we believe we can help people living with mental health conditions to connect to their lives, loved ones and society.
